En 1997, los científicos escucharon un ruido proveniente del océano como nunca antes se había conocido. Durante años, este fue el ruido no identificado más fuerte jamás registrado bajo el agua. Pero ahora los científicos pueden explicar el fenómeno.
Con el tiempo han surgido varias teorías sobre el origen del misterioso sonido.
Algunos argumentaron que el ruido era el resultado de ejercicios militares navales o de motores de barcos.
Otros incluso sospecharon que podría tratarse de una criatura grande y desconocida de las profundidades marinas.
El sonido ondula en frecuencia y fue detectado por dos juegos de hidrófonos a una distancia de al menos cinco mil kilómetros.
Pero para viajar tan lejos, explicaron los científicos, el ruido debía ser muy fuerte, lo que descartaría la posibilidad de que fuera emitido por un animal.

Misterio resuelto
Utilizando la ubicación de los hidrófonos, los investigadores de la Agencia Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica de EE. UU. (NOAA) sólo pudieron limitar la ubicación del ruido a algún lugar frente a la costa sur de Chile, en el Océano Pacífico.
Con el paso de los años, a medida que los investigadores desplegaron más hidrófonos, cada vez más cerca de la Antártida, se acercaron a la fuente del ruido. Y fue en 2005 cuando el misterio terminó. El ruido fue el resultado de un iceberg que se resquebrajó y se desprendió de un glaciar antártico.
En los últimos años, los nuevos hidrófonos operados por la NOAA han registrado ruidos similares en el Océano Austral y el Atlántico. No más dudas.
A medida que la pérdida de hielo en la Antártida se acelera más allá de lo que los científicos esperaban debido al calentamiento global, más de la mitad de las plataformas que sostienen la capa de hielo del hemisferio sur están a punto de colapsar. Ya se están desprendiendo grandes trozos del tamaño de Londres y esos ruidos son cada vez más comunes.
