Un nuevo descubrimiento podría facilitar la búsqueda de diamantes, una tarea notoriamente difícil. Las investigaciones han demostrado que un mineral menos buscado contiene pistas que pueden indicar la proximidad de los diamantes y acelerar el proceso de búsqueda.
«A los productores de diamantes a veces les gustaría extraer oro, cobre o cualquier otra materia prima, porque encontrar y extraer diamantes es complicado», dice Andrea Giuliani, científico principal del Instituto de Geoquímica y Petrología de ETH Zurich, a Ciencia IFL.

Ahora parece que otro mineral puede acelerar el proceso, ya que se ha descubierto una conexión entre el olivino y los diamantes. La olivina se compone de aproximadamente la mitad del mineral de kimberlita y contiene concentraciones variables de magnesio y hierro. La composición del olivino es crucial, ya que se ha descubierto que la presencia de más magnesio que hierro es una buena señal para los mineros de diamantes.

Si el olivino tiene un alto contenido de hierro, significa que el mineral fue alterado durante el proceso geológico, eliminando los diamantes;
Por otro lado, si el olivino tiene poco hierro y mucho magnesio, significa que los diamantes sobrevivieron;
La empresa De Beers apoyó financieramente el estudio y proporcionó muestras de kimberlita, lo que les dio acceso temprano a los resultados y ya están utilizando análisis de olivino;
Las investigaciones muestran que los diamantes permanecen intactos sólo cuando las kimberlitas contienen fragmentos del manto que no han sufrido interacciones extensas con fundidos anteriores.
“La gran ventaja de este nuevo método es que es más sencillo y finalmente nos permite comprender por qué funcionaron los métodos anteriores”, concluye Giuliani.
La investigación fue publicada en Comunicaciones de la naturalezaconsolidando el descubrimiento de la conexión entre el olivino y los diamantes y abriendo la puerta a una búsqueda más eficiente de estas gemas preciosas.
