Según lo informado por el espacio.com, los investigadores analizaron muestras de meteoritos supuestamente tan antiguos como planetesimales. En este proceso, encontraron huellas de reacciones químicas que tendrían lugar en presencia de moléculas de agua.

Con el tiempo, el agua reacciona con los compuestos químicos de las rocas, separándose de su átomo original y reaccionando con otros elementos.
En presencia de hierro, por ejemplo, el agua se une a él y genera óxido de hierro. Esta nueva sustancia es la que colorea la superficie de Marte.
El gran problema es que esta nueva sustancia desaparece llevándose consigo parte del hierro.
Luego, los científicos pudieron comprobar la presencia de agua analizando el nivel de hierro en el meteorito en comparación con otros elementos en las rocas especiales.

Durante la comparación, los investigadores esperaban encontrar hierro en la misma cantidad que otros elementos, como el níquel y el cobalto. En cambio, encontraron menos hierro, lo que implica la presencia de oxígeno que dio lugar a la reacción y, en consecuencia, agua.
Los científicos revelaron en un comunicado que encontraron una presencia de oxígeno 10.000 veces mayor de lo que esperaban en los meteoritos.
